In line with the Europe 2020 strategy, the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) are involved in 11 action areas, known as "Thematic Objectives".
An amount is allocated to each Thematic Objective for the 2014-2020 period:

- All European programmes financed by ESIF must take these action areas into account.
- Every project co-financed by ESIF must fall within one of these action areas.
